apprentice in search of a teacher in southern Florida

3 messages · last activity 2/24/2006

i am an extremely eager apprentice, a quick learner, and i've been drawing on people since the 4th grade.this is something i've been thinking about alot for the past many years, but i am my own worst critic and i didn't think my work was up to the standards of the work i've seen and admire so much. thankfully, progression builds confidence, and i'm ready to do something w/ my art. i do have a portfolio and everywhere that i've checked, everyone's shop is full and noone has time to teach. so i'm a bit distrought, but still very willing to learn. if anyone can help, please email me at [email removed]. THANX
UPDATE: i read evrything on the topic entitled "apprentice 101", and i'm totally down w/ all of that. i want to learn to make the needles and sterilization... everything!! i guess i need to add a good bit more to my portfolio, but i'm working on it. i did find one shop that wants to charge $6,000 cash/7,500 credit, up front, for a 6-9 month apprenticeship. 3,000 to the owner and 3,000 to the artist that will be teaching. does this sound cool? please give input. THANX
The only thing that catches my eye personally is the 6-9 months thing. In this industry there really is no time limit on learning. Some take longer than others to learn, I guess I come from the old school of learning that you shouldnt even pick up a machine for at least that long. There are so many aspects in learning tattooing, its not just the technical dos and donts on how to apply a good tattoo. When an apprenticeship feels like a school it may not be the best place. In any case its a good thing your willing to learn in a studio and the proper way, there are to many home self taught people out there. Good Luck
