Does the Instructor make the artist? Or does the artist make the artist? Can a formally trained artist learn technique from a video/book instead of a live instructor. If you think of it...the book/video were created by a live person. What's your view on this...

I think they have dentistry books too, but I wouldnt want my teeth yanked out by someone who learned from one instead of an artist who learned from a live (very qualified) person... find the best artists you can, get tattooed by them, and develop relationships (while drawing so much your talent is completely undeniable). If your good and deserve it, oppertunities will present themselves.
I think the last guy who replied to this didn't quite get the fact that medicine and artistry aren't necessarily learned by the same process...and I can tell you that they are definately not taught the same way either. Obviously an apprenticeship is the way to go but it can be self taught as well as long as you have a natural talent for art. If you can't find a mentor then I suggest that you start getting tattoos (if you already haven't and just watch what they do from the moment they put the needle in the tube to the moment they wipe down the finished peice. You learn...I did.
