black oxide finish

5 messages · last activity 2/8/2008

does anyone happen to know if you can put a black oxide finish on a machine frame by yourself. or if this is too complicated a process to do by yourself?
it's messy, complicated and dangerous... you're better off having it done professionally. If it's a brass frame you can blacken it yourself, there is a solution which will cause it to oxidize much faster. If it's an iron or steel frame you're better off taking it to your local metal shop, they'll be able to do it, or at least point you to someone who can. If it's a bent steel frame, toss the sumbitch and get a better frame.
It's fairly simple instead and not dangerous at all. Let me point you to a product I've been using for the past 3 years. The company that makes it is a well known company manufacturing plating products. This method is done in cold, harmless and does not release any dangerous vapors. You get an activator substance and a sealing agent. It will take you no more than 5 minutes to get your frame blacken. This does not work for SS or brass. I only tried it over 1018. http://www.caswellplating.com/kits/black.htm Make sure your frame is either sand blasted, sanded down by hand or any abrasive procedure that will ensure optimum contact with the solution.
thanks a lot for the help.
If you need to spot a small area rust converters work too
