I am a firm believer in getting a deposit on custm work. After spending countless hours on drawing up stuff for people and then having them either never show up again or worse they have the nerve to say" the art is ok but my cousin will do it cheaper so can you make me a copy?" AAAARRRGGGHHHH!!!! And I'm not talkin about requiring a huge deposit just a few bucks will do it. In my shop on custom work we get an idea of the full price of the piece then we require 50% of the total price as a deposit....and we draw it as many times as we need to to satisfy the client.usually only requiring small revisions here and there. It has worked for us for many years. It keeps us from doing artwork for people who are just fuckin around. I don't know about you but I don't have time to draw up shit for people who aren't serious...T

I dont' think you're being beyond reason (although I can see some clients thinking 50% being steep, especially on a, say, $1000 piece, but then again, it weeds out the tire kickers). We're a full custom shop so we take deposits on every appointment. Have had no complaints so far, people are usually reasonable.

Yeah, I think getting deposits from customers is an easy way to tell if someone is serious or not. Even if a tattoo is only gonna be $60 we still take a $50 deposit. Seems like everyone has been cool with it, a few people call in or mail deposits. A lot of people travel to our studio (like 70%) so we often take deposits over the phone. Soon, we will take them online...
