coil size confusion

3 messages · last activity 5/3/2010

When shopping around for a set of good machines I'm running into a lot of conflicting information concerning coil size. Most of the name brand manufacturers are selling 8 coil wrap machines and defining them as color machines holding from 11-17 magnums. I have been taught that 8 coil wrap is for fine and mid size outlining, from 1-7's. Reason being that an 8 coil warp doesn't have the power to push more needle groupings. Finding 10 wrap machines is difficult, and looking for 12 wrap for large color work has been unsuccessful. so there in lies my confusion.
In general, my opinion is that 8 wrap coils are better no matter what your using your machine for. This is because the less wraps and the thinner the gauge of the copper wire, the electricity will meet less resistance and travel through the coils quicker. I'd worry more about the other components on the machine. That's just me.
Oh, and while I don't know how many wraps www.fkirons.com machines are, people seem to love his 1.5 coil Color Packers/ big mag pushers...which surely use less wire than than traditional coil set ups.
