Does grey inked tattoos start darker then lighten?

Hi there, ok, i ent to a recommended tattooist, where he was to place black script over a light grey pattern. The black script looks great, but the light grey bit is quite dark, and not really light grey. The artist said that when you do grey it starts a couple of shades darker and over a week settles into the colour it's meant to be. Is this correct or did he fuck up and make that up to cover his arse till i discovered a week later it doesn't lighten? And if it is a fuck up, can the grey bit be lightened to the shade of grey i wanted initially? Many thanks, and sorry i'm doubting this guy as perhaps he's telling the truth, but as it looks at the moment it's wrong.

Perfectly normal - it should lighten up very significantly.
