Fine arts to tattoo artist

Hi everyone...I'm very interested in learning anything I can about tattooing. Not to toot my own horn, but I'm a pretty decent artist and believe I have the potential to be a good tattoo artist. I don't know much about tattoo art, but I've been reading a lot. About 3 years ago I did some drawings and took them to George, a guy in PA who had a tattoo parlor in my area. He thought they were great and gave me some advise, which I've been working on for the past 3 years...to build my portfolio. I have only once attempted to tattoo, but I was given the oportunity by some people who didn't really know what they were doing. I started the tattoo and not even 1/2 inch into the piece handed the gun back to my friend and said, "I can't do this...I don't know what I'm doing." Can anybody help? I need some direction about where to get started? The guy (George) who gave me the good advice about building my portfolio moved away and I have no mentors for this. Thanks in advance to anyone who offers me guidence.
