What does it mean if the koi is facing up or down and black or orange?
Koi Fish meaning

lol Man I've read this over and over and I should know it by now. It's all dependant on the person's beliefs. But I think traditionally the direction the koi faces is supposed to be relative to the direction in life it's going. The koi swims upstream , up the waterfall and turns into a dragon, golden one if I'm remembering any of this correctly. The leaves you have in the water around the koi (i.e. maple = autumn? cherry blossums = spring) determine which season of life the koi is going through. Crap that don't sound right but I think i'm close lol. Well it's either something like that , or something completely different from that lol.
Haha, I know this a common question, but maybe there's another meaning to it... Also, what about the color? Black vs. Orange?
In Japan, auspicious colors are red, white, black, blue, yellow, & brown.
Here this link details the coloring of alot of different damn koi fish lol

Only in the Niigata area of Japan were carp developed and refined successfully by selective breeding to eventually become what we know today as living jewels . There's a ton of info out there on the colors, and heritage of today's koi.
