my first tattoo what should i do?

ok well i am getting my first tattoo next month and was wondering if you guys could help me out a bit. I have the design thought out so thats no problems, i just wanted to know because i am getting it on my leg and want to know if it will hurt and get annoying when i walk around? also after i get the tattoo can i go home and clean all around it getting all the smuged ink off my leg or should i just leave it all till the next day? also what should i be in for? i hear its like having pins stuck in your skin is this true? cheers
