I HAVE BEEN PRACTICING TATTOOING FOR A WHILE NOW AND I HAVE ABOUT GOT IT DOWN WITH SOME SMALL DESIGNS AND I AM TRYING TO GET A GOOD ARENTICESHIP AROUND WHERE I LIVE BUT MY QUESTON IS THAT HOW I KNO WHAT NEEDLES TO USE IN WHAT TATTOOS WHICH TYPES FOR WHAT TATTOOS ROUND, FLAT, MAGNUM I AM A LITTLE CONFUSED OF THIS SUBJECT
If you don't know then why are you tattooing?
what have u been practising tattooing with up till now? skewers? if u cant figure out which needles to use on which pieces i think perhaps you should consider a new trade!
Hey dude you dont have to go by what anyone says ( such as the assholes that replied before me you can tell they are some of those "tattoo artists" that think they know everything and dont want anymore tattoo artists to pop up anywhere, they want to be part of a dying breed with big fucking egos,if you want to be a good tattoo artist you have to always be willing to learn or give advice when needed, use what you think will be good for the tattoos that you do,i dont fuck with liners,i just use an 8 tight bugbite shader ,gives a really fuckin bold outline! And then for filling in,I use 6 or a 7 flat, for like thin tribal designs, then I use 7-13 mags with tats that will have different ascending or descending tones like with black and grey, but for like "usual" tats (sparrow, nautical star,or butterflies,I just use a different variety of needles like 8 rounds,4 flats, and even some diamonds every now and then. I learned by myself and you can too, good luck man!!!
You don't know how to handle using liners and don't use them...yet you're giving advice? What happens when the need arises for a not-so-bold outline?
BTW, I'm semi-self-taught (online "tattoo school"...need I say more?). My intentions were sincere though. But it saddens me that I am in the same group as the scratchers who are ignorant and won't listen to reason. The information given in this thread is bad. It's a case of the dumb teaching the dumber. I've been lucky to find some good resources with real artists and while they may not give me their secrets, I'm not haunting places that scratchers go and pass on inaccurate and stupid advice while calling everyone who won't give up info bad names. Even though I'm in the same position as some of you guys, I understand and agree with a lot of the artists position with not giving up info. Not to mention that through my own experience, I truly have leasrned that an apprenticeship is the way to go. To the original poster..practicing tattooing and then trying to find an apprenticeship isn't going to get you anywhere. A shop doesn't want to see a bunch of bad tattoos that you did in a non-shop environment. It will harm you more than help you.
