ointment yes or no ?

After reading so much about tattoo aftercare i'm confused now... Being a apprentice now i asked my teacher about ointment and he keeps on telling me that there is actually no need for it. The only time he apply some ointment (fougera vitamin A and D) is just after the tattoo is done...for the rest he tells me to let it heal from itself. He also told me that you could add some ointment after the peel is gone and the skinn looks like almost healed (when it looks a little dry). And to tell you guys the true, i never see any people coming back to his shop complaining about a bad healing or what so ever.... I tattooed myself 2 times now, the first time i added ointment like 2 to 3 times a day. the second time only once.....and i have to say that the second tattoo heals faster... seems like when you add ointment you make the skinn more fragile (soft and wet) !?
