I am planning on opening a tattoo shop soon. I am in the process of writing a business plan. I have already written about 3 and I keep going over them and changing things. I am having trouble with certain parts of the plan. I am wondering is I could get some useful advice from current shop owners. My husband and I have been in the industry for 7 years. He has been tattooing for 5. I am currently apprenticing for tattooing. I have been piercing for 3 years. I know where we want to open shop, it's just a matter of obtaining the right documents and research data in order to properly write the plan. Also the financial area of the plan is where I am stuck. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you....
Opening a tattoo shop

Simple:
0) City code research (make sure you can open it in such area and what they require)
1) great Artists - at least two 3-4 that can rotate shifts.
2) Location - great foot and car traffic.
3) Setup investment - Gear, supplies, decoration Anywhere from 15-50K +
4) back up money to spare a few bad months
5) Advertising - Spread the word through print, online, etc advertising
6) Luck
Go see your accountant. They do business plans things all the time. Keep in mind that one of the main reasons for doing a BP is to force potential entrepeneurs to address the cold financial realities of their proposed undertakings rather than ignoring them and instead comcentating on stuff like what the business card should look like.
Of all the BPs I've done for friends & friend of friends over the years, only about 10% have gone & set up a business after seeing the financial realities.
I am completely aware of the financial difficulties of opening a shop. i am willing to take the risk. I am just asking for a few ideas that might help. I have already found a location, artist all the BS stuff that goes into opening a shop. I am working on a business plan so that I can prove to banks and whom ever I plan on going to to ask for a loan. I want to be as professional with the business as i can. I know that shops are based on the quality of art that is produced, but i want to be able to own a shop that treats its artist with respect. I have worked in shops where the owners didn't care what the artist was doing as long as they could do as many tattoos as possible in one day. I hate that. I want artist to do quality, not quantity. Thank you all for the advice. I am open to ideas.
Thank you.....
Also, I am wondering if i should have the shop be formed as an LLC or Sole Proprietorship?
I have owned a few tattoo shops and have found loans are not the way
to go, starting out can suck people don't know the quality of work ect. ect.
I just opened a new shop in Feb. and I'm just now starting to get busy. I think it would be best to start a S Corp or Small Business Corp. and find investors ( talk to your tax account to find out how it all works) but this way you have no loans to pay back and if your shop goes under the investors are out their money ( friend are not good investors).
im currentlly lookin for another shop to work at,im not getting enuff hrs where im at.im liecensed and the whole work.is your shop open?
