power supply vs tattoo machine?

5 messages · last activity 8/31/2010

im on a limmited budget... i can get a couple of good machines like micky sharpz and a cheap power supply or, a good power supply like a eikon ps and a couple of cheaper machines from internation tattoo supply.... im wondering which is more important - a power supply or the tattoo machine? im a scratcher now but i will be a prof. one day. i am an artist, however i cant afford the luxury of an apprenticship right now so im using the resources at hand. hence- this message. any advice would be helpful. ty.
To be honest...both are equally important. Ask yourself this, what is more important, the motor or the chassis on a automobile. Listen, I will save you a bunch of money. I have had 3 power supplies. 1 was a Monster Point 1.5A, a big cream color 3A, and my Eikon 300EMS. I do not see a noticeable difference between the 100$ 3A and the Eikon. A 2 amp power supply will work fine. Just look for the technical specifications of the power supply. If it says 2A, buy it. On the same note, I am a scratcher/apprentice, and have owned a few machines. I bought a few 80$ cheap machines. I had to rebuild them to make them work for my technique. Modifying them was cheap and fairly easy to do. Just look for a good frame. Having a well balanced frame is as important as the coils and springs....kind of. I own a few Jim Martini Machines...and a BTK color packer. Amazing A well built machine is worth every penny spent. So save up. Another direction to go before you make a few mistakes. Take a Blood Borne Pathogen Course before worrying about the hardware of the trade. The life you save may very well be your own.
ive taken the OSHA Blood Borne Pathogen Course and passed it, thanks. so basically i guess what im thinking is the eikon (or critical)psu is a bit over-rated but only because of its price -not speaking on behalf of its quality as a product of course but i can do the same job with a cheaper subsitute. thanks scratcher 2
Not a problem man. I agree on the price...but they are nice. I seen a guest artist use the critical. I was a bit skeptical about throwing a baggy over something that produces heat. He did a 4hr sitting (with a couple breaks) and it seemed to be fine. Any power supply with a true 2amp hardware will be just as efficient as the Eikon. I used to build amplifiers for stereo systems, so take my word on it. Before anyone points out that I own an Eikon...the shop I am at wanted me to get it.
yeah i just dont see myself paying that much for a psu anymore... i just realized for the same price as an eikon ems300 i can get a Playstation3 that plays blue ray DVDs.....lol. and i dont think eikon psu's are that much more technologically advanced as that! so why pay that much... maybe when im a millionaire. 2amp. thanks.
