I'm a 30 year old professional artist from California, and in the last year have become interested in the art form of tattooing. I grew up in small town Ohio and never had any friends who had tattoos, nor was I really exposed to tattooing. Thus I had limited stereo-types of the culture. When I moved out to California, one of my coworkers, who is now one of my best friends, was a sleeved out rockstar. I started really paying attention to the tatts he had (all Kat Von D, who he's been friends with forever), and realized how beautiful tattoos could (and SHOULD be). So I started picking up a magazine once in a while, and saw a broad range of styles, from artost Deano Cook to Dawai Zhang, and started to see how amazing the field was and how many ARTISTS there were producing amazing work. Then I started hearing about Miami Ink from my buddy, and started watching that. That really showed me how human the art was. How personal it was. I just am in love with it now.
So, anyway, I really think this is something I'd like to do one day. At any rate, I at least want to just learn so much more about it. I've always read books on art, and just love reading this stuff. Needless to say, Amazon doesn't really carry books other than "How to Choose your First Tattoo" and stuff like that. Can you guys recommend any great reading? I'm interested in everything about it, bios on artists, the history of it, about how it's done, how to tune or build or tune a machine.
Also, please understand that I have absolutely no interest in becoming a scratcher, or buying some junk kit and trying to learn myself. At this point, I honestly just want to learn much more about the art. One day, I'd like to apprentice with a great artist, but I'd like to learn more before I go bugging every artist in town.
Thanks for any help!
