Scars, pain and first time

Hello I have a scar on my chest, its an old body mod of some Kanji. Unfortunately only one of the the 3 kanji remains and I have the choice of having it lazered out or having it covered with a tattoo. I have always wanted a tattoo and have looked into it for a few years now. I am just worried about how much it will hurt. It would be between my breasts but then only needs to be just over an inch or two square. I want a basic tribal style Manta-ray as they hold meaning for me. Anyway I was wondering if any of you had experience of having that area done, or scar covering you could share. I have heard that getting it done there really hurts....?
