Shading

I haven't been in the business very long so i'm lookin for a little advice from the pro's. With regards to shading, i'm familiar with the technique but i'm not sure about the consistency of the ink i should be using. Most I've heard is thinning ink with alcohol. What ratio is best and what else works good? Any other tips would be crazy appreciated, thanks Kearney
