heyo just wondering if anyone knows anymore latin translations for the phrase : "she flies with her own wings" ? so far have got: "alis volat propriis" and "alis volat propiis" - not sure if these are 100% correct either! pls reply if u actually have studied latin!! am getting this tattooed (obvi) and want it to be perfect cheers

Alis Volat Propriis is the correct form of the phrase, although it is somewhat acceptable to use Alis Volat Propris. Either way, the R is essential, just not always the second I (it's a bit less formal/proper without the second I). Another phrase along the same lines is Alis Grave Nil, which means "nothing is heavy to those who have wings." Or Per Volar Sonata, which means "born to fly upwards." Get online at a respectable place like wikipedia and look it up to make sure you have the proper spelling. The average person won't know the difference (which is why people get away with those kanji tattoos that often say something TOTALLY different than they think it says), but you don't want something permanently on your body that is incorrect. I have a friend who got a tattoo recently to memorialize her mom (my best friend), who died in a house fire, and didn't realize until I questioned her about it two weeks later that she'd put her mom's date of death as 9-17 instead of 11-17. I'm sure yours would be nowhere NEAR as frustrating as that if it were spelled wrong, but still, always better safe than sorry if it's permanent!

The ONLY CORRECT version of the term is "Alis volat propriis" Oregon State Motto - The state motto is "She Flies With Her Own Wings". Adopted in 1987, it replaces "The Union", which was the previous state motto adopted in 1957. Also this saying in latin is not gender specific. the Feminine version would correctly be "En alis volat propriis." as far as the propris version "single i" it is deemed incorrect and the word propriis alone out of sentance would be propius. It is pronounced Alis sounds like ahh, lease volat ~ woll (like doll with w) , at propriis ~ prop, ri (like rip without the p), ees (like east without the t)
