shop fees and pay

I have a question about compensation. I recently was hired at a shop and was suprised to hear the owner tell me he wanted 250. Per week on rent plus 40% commision. I told him this was not right and that it would be one or the other, but they said no that shops charge this way. On top of that I would supply everything I needed, after talking they agreed to 50%comm for 90 days and later to revisit the offer. They said this is normal for a ship too charge and what I asked for wasn't. So I ask...is this normal for someone to ask of an artist for?
different shops have different pay-outs. but based on mine, that does seem ridiculous. its 50/50 at my shop. we supply our own needles, tubes, inks, power supplies, and machines; but they supply everything else like polly towels, paper towels, caps, tongue depressors, razors, green soap, alcohol, clip cord covers...and the list goes on. for every tattoo i do, i keep 50% and pay out 50%. that 50% i and the other artists pay out helps to pay the rent, bills, and the "supplied" supplies. if they're asking as much as you say they are , they're just ripping you off.
You know ...... if you have to ask this question on a forum board like this. You probably arent really ready for a shop yet. If you have been in the craft you should know the standards and fees. Along with some contacts that would of helped you with this question before you would of ever posted it here.

Thank you for your help 7Stars- I thought it was rather unusual for someone to ask that of an artist, and I sincerely apprieciate your help and advise. I actually like this shop as well as the owner-and hope that we can continue after the 3 months is up. As far as the comment regarding whether or not someone is ready for the industry- I am sure that when you began your career as an artist you knew it already and that is great-but there are many variables and owners out there...I was just asking for another artists imput as those whom I have spoke to in my area pretty much agreed to what 7Stars said... It goes without saying that this owner also stated he got his information on the internet...so you can imagine why I would be wary. thanks though for your imput as well!
