Well, basicly nobody can be totally unique, but you can do stuff thats not seen that much in tattoo world. So who are the artists that make tattoos that dont rely so much to tattoos as there influences, but other art? To make it clearer. For example someone like Shige is one of the best tattoo artists in the world, but are his subjects something thats new to tattoos? No. Mike Devries makes killer portraits with amazing depth and colors, but are portraits new? No.
And lets take people who are new to tattoo generation at the moment. So someone like Guy Aitchison and his style was unique when he started, but not now. So lets focus on the younger guys. Tell me who you think is unique.
ps. This isnt any "definite list", just my own views. You are welcome to post your own.
Jesse Smith www.kaoticenzymes.com
One of the few people who does stuff that gets its inspiration mainly from outside the tattoo world. From graffiti to video games. There are many great New-School artists, but usually they have imagery thats maybe influenced by Kustom Kulture (Flaming skulls, rat fink type stuff, frankensteins, birds, brass knuckles...) or oriental art (hanya masks, colorful dragons, geishas). But then you look at the stuff that Jesse does. The pics feel like they could have been taken from any comic book, or murky and dark alley where you can feel the pulse of the city. Thats where they have lived there own life when imagination gets out of control and is ready to create world inside worlds. And they continue to do so in the skin.
Nick Baxter www.nickbaxter.com
His vibe is what comes from human relationships and many aspects of our world. In the Old-School or Neo-Traditional Old-School you too can have sociopolitical stuff, with Clasped hands and a text that could read "United we stand, divided we fall" or just a eagle to represent freedom. But Nick dosnt rely on ready made folk imagery, but lets us as individual to make our own. We can all create our own folk art and give them meanings that we like them to have.
Yann www.yourmeatismine.com
Like childrens doodles or cave paintings, Yann´s style ows more to the dream world, pop art and people like Tim Burton. And it also challenges what is considered art in these days. When cave men did these drawings thousands of years ago, did they think its art, or where they just expressin how they see the world? Yann makes us question, think, and maybe realise, that the biggest influence is our own minds. And thats unique.
Electric Pick www.electricpick.com
Pick is like Jesse, but hes stuff is more deeply rooted to comic books and architecture. Crazy ass robots and cool as hell ladys. He doesnt just do comic book type stuff, he lives the life. In one of his interviews he asked himself a question and this is what he answered.
Do you think there are people, living among us, walking around us that are actually robots disguised as humans? Yes! I do think we have the technology yet and in fact I think there are more of them then there are of us!
Bugs www.bugshomepagething.com
Few people make stuff that seem like paintings besides the color´s. With Bugs the how the tattoos are shaped is a big part. You can see influences from Cubism and art deco. And also there is a feel that I get when I look buildings. They seem so majestic and demanding. Every shape is like a calling card from the human like gods.
