Wrist Tattoo

Hey, First of all I should say that I've never had a tattoo before so I'm honestly pretty ignorant about the whole thing, but if someone wouldn't mind enlightening me I'd be greatful. I want to get a tattoo on my wrist, but going up the side instead of on the back or inner wrist. Is this a possible or advisable location? Ideally I'd like it to start at the base of my thumb and be about 3 inches long. I'd like to know what to expect also. Thanks very much
