Your opinion, please

I am an aspiring tattoo artist who is working on his portfolio for a prospective apprenticeship. I was planning on giving myself until fall/winter to get a good collection of art together but yesterday I saw an ad on craigslist for a possible apprenticeship position. I gave the guy a call and he explained to me that it would cost me 4 grand for a 6 month - year apprenticeship. 1 grand up front. I told him my background (associates in fine art + bachelors in film) and he seemed impressed. He didn't seem overly concerned when I said I didn't have a polished portfolio ready at the moment (mostly sketches). When I asked where I could see some of his work he referred me to his myspace site, which is http://www.myspace.com/newyorkink67. I gave it a look and wasn't too impressed. So anyway, I'm thinking of whether or not I should call him back tomorrow to set up an interview. I just wanted some of impressions of this guys site. He says he has been tattooing for 20+ years. Any feedback or advice?
I went to his page and have to say some of his stuff is...well just ok. I would have to tell you that in my personal opinion and again just basing on what you said your education is I would keep looking... There are so MANY great artists out there, if I was investing good money into my training I would look for someone who was definately worth it...who knows maybe this guy is...but based on his ink and having seen some of the best he falls short...
Thanks for your insight. I was pretty much leaning in that direction anyways and just wanted some other peoples impressions.
