This one was done for my cousin, Candice, who kept telling me she wanted a sparrow (swallow, as was the trend). She was not very open to telling me why finally once the tattoo started I asked again "Why?" Finally, she said because she is a "Jersey Girl" and the New Jersey state bird is a golden finch. At this point in my freehand and reference-less design, I already had finished most of the head in black. Too late to turn it into a gold finch, I continued the bird utilizing the colors of the state bird. Lesson of the experience, be more open to the artist that is permanently marking your meaningful image. Releasing your fears of your personal sentiment to your artist will only give them the correct direction in which to design your life long tattoo.
