Making art you love refills the well when you can actually enjoy it. But if guilt floods in the second you make something for yourself (guilt about the work you could be doing instead), the advice falls apart.

And if you're anything like me, once that guilt hits, it wears me out quick, and I might as well take a 🐈‍⬛️ nap until my body and mind are ready to try again. Sometimes what gets me ready is exercise, sometimes it's cooking, sometimes it's playing Barbie with my kid.

The fix then becomes dealing with the guilt first.

1. REFRAME WHAT IT IS. Making art for you isn't stealing time from the real work. It's what keeps you able to do the real work at all. It's not a break from the job, it's part of the job. It's exploration of ideas that your dream pieces originate from.

2. LOOK AT WHERE IT'S COMING FROM. That guilt is usually a sign you've tied your worth to your output, so the guilt isn't a rule to obey. It's information, pointing at a mindset that needs to shift.

3. GIVE YOURSELF PERMISSION on purpose, and start small. The more you prove the world doesn't end when you make something just for you, the more the guilt loses its grip.

This is the work we do in my Candid Color Accelerator.

It's a mentorship for professional tattooers who are ready to do more than just

❌️ make as much money as you can until your body is fucked.

✅️ This is for the ones who are ready to evolve their art and take on the lifelong pull that every artist feels between creating and actually living.
