Although I love painting and other media, I will die on the hill believing that working with color pencils is the most translatable muscle memory activity towards tattooing. If you can make color pencil look great on paper then you have mastered much of what technically holds back many tattooers.

Although this was an obsession all on its own, I still wish I would have done this when I first started. I love workshoping with tattooers now and showing the best methods for this. The confidence it gives makes it a non-negotiable, even for black and gray work.

There wasn't fake skin when I first started so this looked like hand-making stencils and practicing with micro pens...
This is still a great method if you're unable to tattoo on fake skin or want to practice when not in the studio.
And it's about the drills. One line, curves, circles, stars...
Easy stuff that progressively gets harder.

But seriously, going slow until you nail it is the secret to getting faster. Trying to tattoo fast for the sake of going fast is just gonna make it take longer.

In the beginning, it can't be a hobby. You sprint and push yourself to max capacity. But know that it is only a sprint and without balance and recovery, you burnout fast.
And those dream pieces are another non-negotiable. It's your North Star.
