Details of swoopy strokes, thick paint, and puppy eyes! It's in the middle of drying which is why you can see blotchy values in the background. That's oil that hasn't dried yet. It'll all go chalky when dry and then varnish livens it all up again! "Oiling out" a painting is when you apply oil to see the values as they were the last time you painted. You always want to make your new decisions on what you've painted lady time so everything stays consistent and there's no surprises down the line
