JAPANESE TATTOOING WILL MAKE YOU OR BREAK YOU

JAPANESE TATTOOING WILL MAKE YOU OR BREAK YOU. And I genuinely believe it’s one of the quickest ways to find out how much you actually understand tattooing. Because Japanese doesn’t give you many places to hide. You can pull perfect lines. You can pack solid colour. You can make a tattoo look incredible in a freshly edited photo. But can you make it WORK on a body healead? That’s a completely different game. A dragon can’t just be a great drawing. It has to move around the arm. A koi has to swim. Water needs direction. Wind need rhythm. Background isn’t something you add afterwards to fill the gaps. It’s part of the composition from the beginning. And when you start working on sleeves, backpieces and full bodysuits, everything has to communicate. That’s when Japanese tattooing starts exposing you. Bad flow. Bad scale. Bad placement. Poor contrast. Too much detail. Not enough breathing room. There’s nowhere to hide. That’s why I’m obsessed with studying this style. I look at the old masters and the modern masters. Not to copy their tattoos. To understand WHY their tattoos work. Twenty years into tattooing and Japanese tattooing still regularly reminds me how much I don’t know. That’s exactly how I want it. Because the day you think you’ve mastered Japanese tattooing is probably the day you stopped understanding it. You can spend years learning how to tattoo. You can spend a lifetime learning Japanese tattooing
