A full Japanese bodysuit can disappear beneath ordinary…

A full Japanese bodysuit can disappear beneath ordinary clothes. The person wearing it still knows exactly what is underneath. That tells you something about the power of Japanese tattooing. The large-scale tradition we recognise today developed during Japan’s Edo period, 1603–1868. Restrictions on displays of luxury encouraged people to put beautiful fabrics and elaborate decoration inside otherwise restrained clothing. Beauty could be privately possessed. Its value didn’t depend on everybody seeing it. Japanese tattooing has a powerful relationship with that idea, although its history includes both public display and concealment. The later Meiji crackdown pushed it further beneath clothing. You could carry an extraordinary work of art and choose who saw it. That is the part that means something to me. A sleeve, backpiece or bodysuit takes commitment. You make room for it in your life. You return for the next session. You watch a composition develop across your body over months or years. For some people, that becomes a kind of psychological armour. A private sense of strength. A greater feeling of ownership over their body. A reminder of something they chose and followed through. Even with every inch covered by clothing, that feeling can remain. For me, no other style offers the same potential for a complete visual transformation. The imagery, the backgrounds, the areas of untouched skin and the movement of the body all contribute to one composition. That is why I specialise in it. And why studying it matters as much as practising it. You are trusting someone with how that work will live on your body for the rest of your life. Choose someone who understands the responsibility
