Black and grey builds an entire image from black ink diluted into a spectrum of greys, with bare skin standing in for white. Born in 1970s Los Angeles, it's now the foundation of modern portrait, realism and large-scale work.

- Ages gracefully: smooth greywash settles in and holds its form for decades
- The craft is in seamless transitions — jet black to palest grey with no banding or mud
- Protected highlights matter as much as the shadows

- Healed photos are the real test; flat or patchy grey is the common failure
