Tattooing a dragon doesn’t automatically mean you…

Tattooing a dragon doesn’t automatically mean you understand Japanese tattooing. Doing the head, scales and claws convincingly takes skill. Creating an entire sleeve around that dragon takes another level of understanding. Why that subject? What belongs alongside it? What season do the flowers suggest? How will the dragon wrap around the arm? Where does your eye travel when you look at it? Those decisions shape the whole tattoo. You can put five beautifully drawn images on an arm and still have a sleeve that doesn’t work as a complete composition. Everything demands attention. The movement feels disconnected. There’s no room for the main subject to breathe. In strong Japanese work, every element has a purpose. The background creates movement and connects the composition. The flowers help establish the setting and the season. The spaces between the tattooed areas give the design clarity. Everything works in harmony to tell a story.
