This tattoo is two years healed

This tattoo is two years healed. And it looks this way on purpose. One of the biggest misconceptions about tattooing is that color works like paint on paper. Skin doesn’t hold ink that way — it interacts with it. Tattoo ink is naturally transparent, which means the final result is always a collaboration between the ink, your skin tone, and how your body heals over time. That’s why planning matters. For this piece, longevity came down to structure, flow, and thoughtful color placement. The design was built to move with the shoulder and upper back, so it still reads clearly as the body shifts, stretches, and ages. Color choices weren’t based on what looked brightest fresh. They were chosen to work with rich skin tones, layering warm reds, softened greens, and balanced yellows so the tattoo would age evenly instead of becoming muddy or dull. Before tattooing, I test colors using drawdown sheets — laying inks out thinly to see how they behave when layered and healed. This helps me choose tones that hold their value, stay readable, and age gracefully. What you’re seeing here isn’t heavy saturation — it’s intentional transparency, balanced contrast, and breathing room in the design. That’s why this tattoo still has clarity two years later. Good tattoos don’t start with the needle. They start with planning. If you’re thinking about a larger piece or a color project designed to age well, I’m currently building my Q2 call list (April, May, June). ✨ Reach out to get added and start the conversation.
