Portrait tattooing captures a real, recognizable face in ink — a loved one, a hero, a pet. It's widely considered the hardest discipline in tattooing: the eye is exquisitely sensitive to faces, and there's nowhere to hide an error.
- Usually black & grey, where greywash sculpts the planes of a face
- A portrait specialist is a specific expert — not just a generally skilled tattooer
- Healed photos are everything; over-worked skin muddies as it settles
- A high-resolution, well-lit reference is essential — the tattoo is only as good as the photo
- Needs room for detail: forearm, bicep, chest, thigh, back
