FAQ

Finding the Right Tattoo Artist

How do I find a tattoo artist who specialises in my style?

Use the Style filter on the artist search — every artist on TattooNOW has their work tagged by style (traditional, realism, neo-trad, fine-line, geometric, etc). Browse the style guides to see the full vocabulary, pick the one that matches what you want, and every artist page shows only their work in that style.

How far should I travel for the right artist?

Collectors travel regularly for specialised work — it's normal and often worth it. If the style you want is rare, expect a day trip or a stay-over. Conventions are a great option: artists travel to them, so you can meet someone whose home studio is hours away, see their work in person, and book there.

What should I look at in a portfolio before booking?

Look for healed work, not just fresh tattoos. Fresh tattoos are forgiving — they always look sharp. Healed photos show how lines hold, how colour settles, and how the work ages. Look for consistency across multiple pieces, not just one hero shot. If an artist only shows three or four photos, ask for more.

How do I know if an artist is the right fit before I contact them?

Browse their full portfolio, not just the highlights. Look at whether they actively post recent work — an artist who hasn't uploaded in a year may not be taking bookings. Read their bio for any notes on the kind of work they prefer or don't take. When you do reach out, come with a reference image and your placement already decided — it shows you've done the work and gets you a faster, more useful response.

What is the difference between a studio artist and a guest artist?

Studio artists are based at one shop permanently — they have a home city, set hours, and a stable booking pipeline. Guest artists travel between studios, usually announced a few weeks in advance. If you're flexible on timing, guest spots can be a good way to work with someone who isn't local. Check the artist's Instagram or their studio's page for guest announcements.

How early should I book?

Varies a lot. A busy specialised artist — fine-line, hyper-realism, large-scale custom — can be booked out 6–18 months. A versatile studio artist might have a slot next week. Contact the artist directly and ask; most will tell you their current wait time in the first reply. If the wait is too long, ask if they have a cancellation list.
