Realism renders a subject as faithfully as a photograph — lifelike faces, animals and scenes built from value, light and texture instead of bold outlines. It's one of the most demanding styles, and the gap between great and mediocre shows in healed work.

• Two lanes — black & grey (greywash, ages gracefully) and color/hyperrealism (harder, needs flawless blending)
• No outline to hide behind: it lives or dies on value, proportion and protected highlights
• Specialists specialize — a color-realism artist and a B&G portrait artist aren't interchangeable
• Bring a sharp, high-resolution reference; the tattoo is only as good as the source
• Best with room for detail — forearm, bicep, thigh, calf, chest, back
• Judge an artist by healed work, not fresh — that's where weak technique muddies
