A back piece is a large-scale tattoo designed to span much or all of the back as a single, unified composition — one of the ultimate achievements in tattooing and a true centerpiece of any collection.

- Japanese, mythological, realism or ornamental compositions all suit the scale
- A serious commitment — many hours across multiple sessions, sometimes months
- Find an artist who specializes in large-scale work; you're trusting them with skin you can't see
- Pain varies, but the fleshier areas are quite manageable
