Planning a large-scale tattoo?

Planning a large-scale tattoo? A little extra work during the design process can save you time and frustration when it comes to actually tattooing.
In this throwback Fireside Technique episode, Jake shares his approach to mapping the body for better sleeve designs.
Here are 5 tips to keep in mind:
1. Map the body first.
Identify key anatomical landmarks like the shoulder, elbow, armpit, and wrist before starting your design.
2. Think beyond the outer arm.
A sleeve should have visual interest from every angle, not just the front or outside of the arm.
3. Combine traditional and digital techniques.
Tracing the body gives you accurate measurements, while digital tools allow you to develop and adjust your design.
4. Pay attention to transitions.
Just because individual panels look good on a screen doesn't mean they'll connect properly when wrapped around the arm.
5. Use landmarks for stencil placement.
Matching reference points on your stencil to the client's body can make placement faster and more accurate.
The goal? Better flow, more cohesive designs, and less time spent making adjustments on tattoo day.
How are you approaching your large-scale tattoo designs? Are you using traditional mapping, digital tools, or a combination of both?
